Chamber-backed statewide smoke-free bill introduced

Chamber President & CEO Dave Adkisson appeared at a press conference with Rep. Belcher, Rep. Westrom and John Harryman, chair of the Chamber's Health & Wellness Council, in support of HB 289.

Yesterday, Rep. Susan Westrom introduced HB 289, a statewide smoke-free law that prohibits smoking in indoor public places. Chamber board member and Health & Wellness Council Chair John Harryman spoke in support of the bill at a news conference in the Capitol, where the American Lung Association announced Kentucky received an ‘F’ in its State of Tobacco 2012 report. Chamber members overwhelmingly back a smoke-free law because they recognize the effects of smoking on our workforce in terms of absenteeism and lost productivity, as well as their insurance premiums and tax bills. Smoking is not only killing us, it is bankrupting us – both in terms of costs to business and costs to state government.
