The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced Friday that coal ash will be regulated as a non-hazardous waste rather than classifying it as a toxic material.
The EPA published its final rule Friday relating to the disposal of power plant coal combustion residuals (CCR), commonly referred to as coal ash.
The final rule will regulate CCR as a non-hazardous solid waste under Subtitle D of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) instead of the hazardous handling requirements of Subtitle C. By doing so, coal ash can continue to be recycled and reused in industrial products such as concrete, wallboard, and fill material.
Furthermore, the final rule establishes new structural integrity and monitoring standards for coal ash ponds and landfills.
