Bevin announces initiative aimed at helping businesses by cutting unnecessary government regulations

In an effort to address overly burdensome government regulations that impact the business community and others, Gov. Matt Bevin announced his Red Tape Reduction Initiative on Wednesday, which his administration hopes will tackle the issue of excessive or unnecessary state government regulations.

The Red Tape Reduction Initiative was launched by the Bevin administration Wednesday with a website which features a “Report a Regulation” form where the public can identify burdensome regulations and offer suggestions for improvement.

“Governor Bevin knows that for businesses to thrive in Kentucky, the Commonwealth must cut through the red tape of excessive and complex regulatory burdens that continue to be a hardship for many small business owners,” the website states.

The official website, RedTapeReduction.com, also features an overview of the initiative, resources, news on the issue, and testimonials from supporters in the state—including Kentucky Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Dave Adkisson.

“One of the things we hear most from our members is about the burden of overregulation,” Adkisson said. “I think this Red Tape Reduction Initiative that Gov. Bevin and his administration have launched will be a tremendous opportunity for businesses to cite specific regulations that make it difficult for them to keep their doors open and to employ Kentuckians.”

Adkisson went on to encourage Kentucky Chamber members and businesses across the state to utilize the Red Tape Reduction website to report the things that they feel are a barrier to their business and could be fixed.

According to a release about the new initiative, Gov. Bevin has already instructed cabinet officials to begin a review of all government regulations currently on the books. The administration states that there are currently more than 4,500 regulations in the state and only 15 to 20 percent of them have been reviewed to determine their effectiveness.

“As a business owner, I understand firsthand how difficult it can be for a new or growing business to be aware of, understand and comply with every government regulation,” Bevin said in the release. “This suffocating red tape is a problem that must be fixed and, with the help of all Kentuckians, we intend to do just that.”
