On Tuesday, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced Kentucky will receive just over $1 million in federal funds for a transitional housing pilot program.
The new pilot program was established under the Comprehensive Addiction Recovery through Effective Employment and Reentry (CAREER) Act which was sponsored by Sen. McConnell and passed by Congress in 2018. The legislation was passed to help address the impact of substance abuse on the country’s workforce by connecting people in recovery with career services and stable housing.
According to a release about the federal funding coming into Kentucky as part of the CAREER Act, the transitional housing pilot program will support long-term recovery by providing funding for temporary housing opportunities for individuals until they can arrange a more permanent living situation. Kentucky will be receiving $1.119 million of the $25 million secured for this pilot project across the country.
“As Senate Majority Leader, fighting the opioid and substance abuse epidemic and helping Kentuckians in recovery get back to work has been one of my top priorities,” McConnell said in a press release. “Kentuckians who find themselves trapped in the cycle of addiction often need assistance to find stable living and employment, which are vital to their long-term recovery. This HUD funding will help Kentucky organizations support individuals transitioning from treatment back into the workforce until they can secure a permanent housing arrangement.”
On Wednesday, Kentucky Chamber President and CEO Ashli Watts applauded the efforts on the issue and federal funding that has been secured for the state.
“The Kentucky Chamber thanks Leader McConnell for his leadership on helping those in the Commonwealth struggling with addiction. Business leaders know meaningful employment and stable housing is essential in the road to recovery,” Watts said.
