State Senator Tom Buford passes away at 72

On Tuesday, it was announced Kentucky state Senator Tom Buford has passed away at age 72.

Buford, a Republican, served in the legislature since 1991 representing the 22nd state Senate district which covers part of Lexington, as well as Garrard, Jessamine, Mercer, and Washington counties. He was the second longest-serving member of the Kentucky Senate.

“It is with great sadness that we learned today of the passing of our colleague and dear friend, Senator Tom Buford. Tom was a dedicated public servant who proudly represented his constituents in the 22nd district and brought an abundance of insight and experience to some of the state’s most complex issues during his 30 years of service in the General Assembly. Tom’s wit, intellect, and zest for life will be missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” said Kentucky Senate President Pro Tem David Givens.

The Senate Democratic Caucus released the following statement:

“[Tom] was a true public servant who was full of life, laughter, and had a contagious smile that could light up any room. Our condolences and deepest sympathies are with his family as they navigate through this difficult time.”

The Kentucky Chamber said the following Tuesday:

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Senator Tom Buford. Having served in the state senate for 30 years, Tom possessed a wealth of institutional knowledge and a witty sense of humor that will be greatly missed. We will forever appreciate his commitment to the Commonwealth and his willingness to work with the business community on important issues. Our condolences go out to Senator Buford’s family in this trying time.”
