Lawmakers are moving the candidate filing deadline back to January 25 with changes coming to legislative districts across the state. The current filing deadline is set for this Friday, January 7.
House Bill (HB) 172, a bill to move the filing deadline for all state and local primary candidates, was approved by the House Elections, Constitutional Amendments, and Intergovernmental Affairs Committee Wednesday before moving to the House floor where the 2nd and 3rd readings were waived and the bill was passed 84-12. This change, from January 7 to January 25, gives those interested in running for office time to see which district their residence is in and file their paper work.
Rep. Steven Rudy, the sponsor of HB 172, said the bill will only apply to the elections being held this year and the new date will remain in effect unless further action is taken by the legislature, even if there are court challenges to the redistricting maps.
The legislation pushing the date back now moves to the Senate for consideration.
