Senate President Robert Stivers, House Speaker David Osborne Re-Elected to Kentucky General Assembly Leadership Roles

UPDATED: With Republicans holding a supermajority in both chambers in Kentucky, Senate President Robert Stivers and Speaker of the House David Osborne were re-elected to the top leadership positions of the two chambers of the Kentucky General Assembly this week.

Senate President Stivers is now the longest-serving senate president in Kentucky history. House Speaker David Osborne being nominated for a fourth term is a first for Republicans in Kentucky history.

Sen. David Givens was re-elected as president pro tempore. Sen. Max Wise was elected majority floor leader, replacing retiring Sen. Damon Thayer. Sen. Mike Wilson won re-election for majority whip, and Sen. Robby Mills won election as majority caucus chair.

The Senate leaders will assume their roles immediately.

House Republican leaders remaining in their roles include Rep. David Meade as speaker pro-tempore, Rep. Steven Rudy as majority floor leader, Rep. Suzanne Miles as caucus chair, and Rep. Jason Nemes as majority whip.

Reps. Osborne and Meade will be affirmed by the entire House when the General Assembly convenes on January 7, 2025.

On December 12, Senate Democrats announced its leadership, in which Senator Gerald Neal was re-elected Minority Floor Leader ahead of the 2025 session. Senator Reginald Thomas and Senator David Yates also were re-elected to their respective positions of caucus chair and minority whip.

Kentucky House Democrats unanimously elected their new leader on November 21, 2024, naming Rep. Pamela Stevenson as minority floor leader.

Stevenson, representing House District 43 in Jefferson County, will become the first Black woman caucus leader in the state’s history. She will replace longtime Rep. Derrick Graham as leader.

Rep. Al Gentry of Louisville will join her as minority caucus chair, and Rep. Lindsey Burke of Lexington will serve as the minority whip.
