Democrat Gary Clemons Wins Special Election for State Senate Seat

Democrat Gary Clemons won the special election Tuesday to represent Kentucky Senate District 37, defeating Republican Calvin Leach and Libertarian Wendy Higdon. Clemons will fill the unexpired term of former Sen. David Yates and serve through the end of 2028.

Clemons secured nearly 73% of the vote in the southwestern Jefferson County district. Voter turnout was approximately 7%, including early and absentee ballots.

The Kentucky State Board of Elections is expected to certify the results soon. Clemons will be sworn into office ahead of the General Assembly’s 2026 Regular Session, which convenes January 6, 2026. With this election, the Senate is comprised of 32 Republicans and six Democrats. The House remains at 80 Republicans and 20 Democrats.

Yates resigned from the Senate in late October after being appointed interim Jefferson County Clerk.
