Kentucky Chamber Foundation Connects Employers, Educators to Strengthen Talent Pipelines

As workforce shortages continue across many of Kentucky’s key industries, employers are taking a more active role in building the state’s future talent pipeline. Through programs like Educator’s Guide to Industry, the Kentucky Chamber Foundation brings businesses, educators, and workforce partners together to connect classroom learning with real-world careers and strengthen long-term workforce development efforts.

Nearly 50 educators and school counselors from six Kentucky school districts gathered in April at Kentucky American Water’s Lexington operations facility for an Educator’s Guide to Industry event designed to connect educators with skilled trade professionals and provide firsthand insight into high-demand careers across Kentucky. The experience also helped teachers and counselors better understand the career pathways, workplace expectations, and skills shaping Kentucky’s future workforce.

Sponsored by the Kentucky American Water Foundation, the experience gave educators firsthand insight into careers in water operations, construction, and other skilled trades while allowing employers to share the hiring needs and workforce realities shaping their industries. Educators heard directly from industry professionals, toured operations facilities, and learned more about the skills and career pathways available to students across Kentucky.

“At Kentucky American Water, we see every day how closely education and workforce readiness are connected,” said Ellen Williams, External Affairs Lead with Kentucky American Water. “Hosting this event gave educators a firsthand look at the careers behind essential services like water, so they can help students better understand the real-world opportunities available to them right here in Kentucky. It was successful because it created meaningful connections between educators and industry and gave participants the chance to see these career pathways in action.”

For many participating employers, workforce development is no longer viewed solely as an education issue but as a business priority directly tied to long-term growth, talent availability, and economic competitiveness.

Several local employers participated, including Associated General Contractors of Kentucky, AE Electrical Solutions, Kentucky American Water, Gray Construction, and Marine Solutions, Inc. Educators also heard from newly hired employees and apprentices who shared their personal career journeys and offered firsthand insight into entry points, workplace expectations, and opportunities for advancement in their industries.

The impact of the event was immediate. Post-event survey data showed participants had a strong interest in continuing to learn about careers in the industry, and more than 95% reported increased awareness of available career pathways.

As workforce shortages continue across Kentucky, efforts like Educator’s Guide to Industry are helping employers take a more active role in preparing the future workforce while giving educators clearer insight into the careers available to students across the Commonwealth. Since launching the initiative, more than 1,300 Kentucky educators and school counselors have participated in industry experiences designed to connect classroom learning with workforce opportunities.
