On Tuesday, Governor Beshear announced a special legislative session to help those impacted by historic flooding in Eastern Kentucky, which took the lives of over 39 Kentuckians and destroyed homes, businesses, and schools. The special session will begin on Wednesday, August 24 at 12:00 PM EST.
During the announcement, Beshear said over the past few weeks of working with legislative leaders, an agreement has been made on legislation that can be passed. He said the conversations have been focused on “how we help these communities and ensure our counties and cities don’t go bankrupt and that our utilities don’t have to raise rates on families already hurting, just to repair and replace necessary infrastructure.”
Beshear said the session will be for the General Assembly to consider legislation that:
- Establishes and appropriates funding to the Eastern Kentucky State Aid Funding for Emergencies fund
- Extending the date of the West Kentucky State Air Funding for Emergencies fund through June 2026
- Provides relief to Eastern Kentucky school districts impacted by the flooding and Western Kentucky School Districts impacted by tornados
