Legislation seeking to assist untapped talent in Kentucky’s workforce sees movement

Individuals from rural areas, veterans, legal immigrants, Kentuckians with lower levels of literacy, and other underrepresented groups could see increased support to attain meaningful employment thanks to a proposal making its way through the legislative process.

House Concurrent Resolution 79, sponsored by Rep. Nima Kulkarni, would establish the Workforce Innovation Task Force to conduct a review of current education and workforce development programs and provide recommendations on how to provide effective workforce development to facilitate the training and employment of historically untapped workforce populations in the Commonwealth.

Kentucky Chamber Senior Vice President Kate Shanks was at the table in committee showing the support of the business community. In a statement, Shanks said statistics show Kentucky continues to see an increasing need for higher workforce participation and she said the legislation could better engage and recruit individuals who aren’t as readily tapped for work and help understand the barriers these populations face.

House Concurrent Resolution 79 passed the House Licensing and Occupations Committee unanimously Wednesday and now moves to the House floor.
