UPDATED: In an effort to give data privacy and security protections to Kentuckians, House Bill 15 saw final passage Wednesday after the House concurred with the Senate changes and voted 94-0 to send the bill to the Governor.
Sponsored by Rep. Josh Branscum, House Bill 15 allows Kentuckians accessing the internet and using social media platforms to exercise a set of rights pertaining to their individual data.
Included in those rights are accessing the data from a company, correcting errors in that data from a company, obtaining a copy of an individuals’ data, the right to demand that a company delete an individual’s data, and a right to opt-out of having one’s data processed and sold to other companies for targeted advertising.
“I’m proud to work with the multitude of groups across industry sectors; business organizations, retailers, privacy security and tech experts, on a workable solution that accomplishes a primary goal, which would give consumers the right to protect their data. And House Bill 15 provides a much-needed baseline statutory framework,” Representative Branscum said when presenting the bill on the House floor.
House Bill 15 previously passed the Senate with Senate Floor Amendment 1 and Senate Floor Amendment 2, both of which made technical corrections to the bill.
