General Assembly closes out 2024 session with final clean up legislation and confirmations

Lawmakers passed a few final bills, took up confirmations and made small changes to the state budget on the last day of the 2024 legislative session Monday.

The Senate confirmed the state’s new education commissioner, Dr. Robbie Fletcher, with a 36-1 vote. Fletcher appeared in front of the Senate Education Committee Friday to answer questions from legislators and lay out his vision for the future of education in the Commonwealth.

Specially called committee meetings Monday morning saw small clean up changes to the budget in an amended version of Senate Bill 91 and changes to the revenue measures passed earlier in the session in House Bill 122.

An amended version of Senate Bill 107 also saw passage with the addition of language from House Bill 193 which prohibits operating a vehicle in dangerous ways in a work zone and establishes penalties.

Other issues they took up on the final day included the “momnibus bill” sponsored by Rep. Kim Moser that was added to a bill as a floor amendment Monday.
