Op-Ed: A Season of Gratitude, A Commonwealth of Possibility

The following is an op-ed piece authored by Kentucky Chamber Foundation Board Chair Les Fugate of Brown-Forman Corporation and Kentucky Chamber Foundation Senior Vice President Beth Davisson

This season gives us a chance to pause and reflect on what makes Kentucky special. Here, gratitude has always been more than a feeling. It shows up in how we work together, how we support one another, and how we invest in the future we want for our Commonwealth.

Through the Kentucky Chamber Foundation, business leaders have spent nearly a decade creating solutions that change lives, strengthen communities, and fuel the economic growth that powers Kentucky forward. That spirit is what drives the Foundation’s next chapter — our renewed purpose to unlock the power of business, accelerate solutions, and build opportunity.

Gratitude in Action

Since 2017, the Foundation has worked with hundreds of employers and partners to build opportunities for those who matter most: our people.

To every employer who has opened doors to students, partnered with schools, invested in educators, hired workers others overlooked, invested in your workforce, and solved problems others only talked about, thank you. Your leadership proves that employers don’t just do business here; they help build the future of this state.

Here’s what business leadership looks like in action:

Investing in the Leaders Who Shape Our Schools

Every great community begins with a great school, and every great school begins with a great leader. That’s why Kentucky businesses have invested in the Leadership Institute for School Principals, helping hundreds of principals strengthen their leadership and inspire the next generation. These efforts extend far beyond classrooms; they have a generational impact on students, families, and communities.

Opening Pathways for Young Kentuckians

Picture a middle school student stepping off a bus and into their potential future workplace. Through Bus to Business®, thousands of students have had that experience, walking into manufacturing facilities, tech companies, and hospitals, and seeing futures they had only imagined before.

To the employers who open your doors and show young people what’s possible: you’re not just hosting field trips. You’re showing them what their future can look like.

Strengthening the Health of the Commonwealth

Kentucky faces one of the nation’s tightest health care labor markets. Through the Hospital Talent Pipeline System, employers, hospitals, colleges, and partners are aligning training with demand and building a stronger workforce pipeline, ensuring Kentuckians have access to care.

Expanding Second Chances

Through the Fair Chance Academy, employers across Kentucky are recognizing that a person’s past does not dictate their potential. Hiring Kentuckians in recovery or reentry is not only good business; it changes lives and strengthens communities. Together with community and recovery partners, they’re giving Kentuckians the chance to rebuild their lives with purpose.

Supporting Kentucky’s Military Families

The Military Hiring Academy helps employers tap into mission-ready talent. Companies are building military-friendly workplaces while nonprofits and community partners help families thrive through each transition. Through employer leadership, military families can put down roots and build their future in Kentucky.

A Table Big Enough for All of Us

As we gather around our own tables this Thanksgiving, we also reflect on the one we are building together for Kentucky. This shared table brings together employers, educators, community partners, elected officials, and funders who are creating solutions side by side.

The challenges ahead are big, but so are the possibilities when we tackle them together. In Kentucky, gratitude is not just something we feel; it is something we do. That is how we build the future we want.

To every business that has stepped up, thank you. And for those ready to join this work, we saved you a seat.
